A long winter’s night of Zooming wherein I realized that in January 2020, I posted an Instagram photo wearing the exact same sweater (“Mouse in the Pudding” knit by @uchomisia). ⁣Same month, new year.
⁣
⁣
My hair is longer now. I have a few more wrinkles. Sunspots, too. Gilly and I are a bit more feral in appearance— a bit wilier. We’ve lived through a pandemic after all. But I’m smiling in this photo, which I wasn’t last year, and that’s genuine.⁣
⁣
Despite all the heartache, strife, struggle, and loss of the past 12 months, I am changed for the better— we, as a collective global community, are 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 for the better. I have to believe that. I choose to believe that. ⁣
⁣
Stay hopeful, friends. Spring is already on the way. ⁣🪴🌞

Just downloaded @Sadeqasays’s YELLOW WIFE and am rapt from the first paragraph. Happy pub day, Sadeqa! I love everything about your success story. So full of hope, tenacity, and heart. Also, I trust everything my dearest @LisaWingate recommends. Cheering you on! 💛@simonschuster

This team will restore the independence and integrity of the Justice Department, renew Americans’ faith in the rule of law, and work tirelessly to build a more equitable justice system.

They understand that the Justice Department exists to serve the American people.

True story:⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣@christy.4 and I met th True story:⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣@christy.4 and I met through a hole in our freshman dorm wall. We had different roommates but our medicine cabinets were separated (we learned) by a thin piece of tin that had eroded. So our first meeting was a kind of embarrassing, “Hi, getting your toothpaste/pimple cream, eh?”⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Two introverts who preferred to stay home watching 𝘔𝘺 𝘍𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘺 in pajamas on a Friday night rather than go out, our friendship was immediate. We’ve been through graduations, career swaps, weddings, pregnancies, cancers, birthdays, kids, decades of video Christmases, and now, COVID.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Far before social distances became the global rule, we proved that true friends are always together in spirit. I haven’t seen her in the flesh in 8 years. The unexpected blessing of this pandemic is that for once, we didn’t fly… for once, we were driving out of safety and the road went straight through her part of rural southern Virginia. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Her daddy lit a stove fire in his barn. They swept the floors, put chairs 8 feet apart, set aside hand sanitizers and bottled water, and gave us the best pitstop imaginable. A reunion of kindredest of spirits, of honorary nieces and fur cousins.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
I’ve learned a great many things in 2020, some old and many new. It’s made me realize that much of the joy we strive to find is already here, waiting for us to notice— to slow down and appreciate. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
I had it in my head that a reunion with Christy would need more time, more flair, more planning and preparation so that everything would be perfectly amazing. But 8 years in the waiting and we said no more. A warm barn. A pitstop. And look… we got a miracle. Carrying that and many more forward into 2021 this week. Wishing you the same. 💖💖⁣⁣⁣⁣
