In case you weren’t aware, today is a national holiday: It’s the fifth annual Independent Bookstore Day! Don’t be fooled by the facades of social media, we are living in an age of community. The big and little main streets of America are being reinvigorated by their citizens’ commitment to supporting one another and thriving despite all obstacles against our diverse democracy. No place is this more apparent than with booksellers. I travel from coast to coast doing book events, and it never fails that at the heart of each city is an independent bookstore.
In her April Writer Unboxed column, Sarah McCoy celebrates one of the nation’s newest holidays: Independent Bookstore Day. Only five years old, you might not have heard of it and that’s okay… because you have now! What could be more exciting than discovering we have a new holiday to bedazzle on our calendars?
A standing ovation for the 4th annual Unbound Book Festival in Columbia, Missouri. Celebrity authors from across the country were brought together with Missouri readers on the campus of Stephens College for two days of unreserved book celebration.

The April blizzard in Minneapolis didn’t stop Literature Lovers’ Night Out™ tickets from being oversold with two nights of author-reader fun for the history books. Authors Sarah McCoy, Pam Jenoff, Susan Gloss, and Meredith May became the Fierce Four as they soldiered through the 15 inches of snow that fell on the Twin Cities in under 24 hours. All for the love of literature! If anyone missed their appearance in Minnesota, signed copies of all the authors’ books can be ordered from their fearless hosts Excelsior Bay Books and Valley Booksellers.
