The San Diego Union-Tribune Features Sarah McCoy

Sarah McCoy, a lifelong fan, returns to Green Gables with prequel

‘Marilla of Green Gables’ is a prequel novel that explores Matthew and Marilla Cuthberts’ early life on the farm, before Anne came to live with them

Internationally best-selling author Sarah McCoy wrote “Marilla of Green Gables” as a tribute to the series by L.M. Montgomery, “Anne of Green Gables.” McCoy believes Montgomery’s book resonates with today’s readers because “it’s about one old woman, one old man, and one unwanted orphan who break social conventions while celebrating the traditions of the heart. Together they overcome adversity, fear and failures as individuals and as a family.

“The novel tells readers, ‘You can, too.’ It’s a message of hope that can be hard to hear amid the onslaught of daily sound bites today,” says McCoy, whose previous novels include “The Mapmaker’s Children” and “The Baker’s Daughter,” a 2012 Goodreads Choice Award nominee. “But between the reader and the page, it has a chance to seed itself in a person’s spirit. I know its capacity. I experienced it the first time I read ‘Anne of Green Gables.’ The books influenced who I grew to be as an adult. I believe that’s why it thrives across generations. Readers are seeking that out in their reading experiences and passing it on to their friends, children and grandchildren.”
