The MARILLA OF GREEN GABLES Paperback Tea Party

In celebration of the paperback release of MARILLA OF GREEN GABLES, Bookmarks hosted a sumptuous Afternoon Tea with author Sarah McCoy at the historic Henry F. Shaffner House in downtown Winston-Salem. Each ticket came with a signed copy of the book, maple creams, scones, and other delights prepared by the pâtissier of the Flour Box Tea Room.

The sold-out affair was a truly unique author experience. Upon arrival, guests were asked to you write down questions – along with their names – which were then put it into a large sweet tea jar. McCoy proceeded to pull questions in “Book Club Bingo” fashion and answer them while readers enjoyed tea and goodies served by the Shaffner House waitstaff. Much laughter and many secrets were shared. By the end of the event, all in attendance felt a kindred spirit to McCoy and her muse, Marilla Cuthbert.

Cindy Martin was the grand prize winner of a collectible MARILLA OF GREEN GABLES basket, prepared by the author herself. The event will go down as a favorite for all who attended.

Confession of a Lapsed Reader

I must confess: I stopped reading.

As a person whose vocation is writing books for people to read, I’m ashamed of this fact. I hid the truth from everyone, myself included, for nearly six months. I was busy, I said. Every time I picked up a book, I thought of something I needed to do: a writing deadline to meet, an Instagram post to craft, a friend’s book release to tweet, a presentation to prepare, an author event to attend, emails to reply, novels to blurb, a dog to walk, a husband to feed, a house to clean, a mother/father/brother/ friend to call, trash to take out, weeds to pull, a birthday card to write, a doctor’s appointment to make, leaves to sweep, an interview to give, a bag to pack, a trip to take, and it all required doing right that minute with no time to spare.

Internationally best-selling author Sarah McCoy wrote “Marilla of Green Gables” as a tribute to the series by L.M. Montgomery, “Anne of Green Gables.” McCoy believes Montgomery’s book resonates with today’s readers because “it’s about one old woman, one old man, and one unwanted orphan who break social conventions while celebrating the traditions of the heart. Sarah McCoy brings Marilla of Green Gables (in paperback)to Nashville’s annual illustrious book festival.

The Southern Festival of Books: A Celebration of the Written Word℠ is a free, three-day Festival hosted each October where readers and writers are offered an opportunity to celebrate the joy of reading and lifelong learning.

Thousands of book lovers come together to hear panels and solo sessions featuring 200 of the nation’s foremost writers. In addition to attending sessions, attendees peruse exhibitor booths, food trucks, and enjoy musical, theatrical, and spoken word performances, along with events for children and youth, on three performance stages on the Plaza.

Sarah McCoy capped off the 2019 Book & Bites literary season with a packed banquet room of kindred spirits. Sponsored by the Friends of the Mountain Branch Library at the Lake Lure Inn & Spa, the luncheon featured McCoy’s latest novel “Marilla of Green Gables,” a tale of life at Green Gables . . . before Anne Shirley.
