Garmisch, Germany.

Days and nights of church bells, ice creams, and hikes sealed with a happily-ever-after kiss. These are a few of my favorite things. Thank you for welcoming us back, Garmisch! And vielen dank to the Riessersee Hotel Garmisch-Partenkirchen for making us feel like family. ❤️

Doc B and I went round to all the spots of our youth, many of which I included in my novel The Baker’s Daughter. So much has changed from when U.S. soldiers camped in the village, but so much remains the same… like the villagers’ love for American muscle cars! And their gracious appreciation for the friendship between our two countries.

Garmisch holds a sacred place in my life. One of refuge, inspiration, and healing. Everyone needs somewhere like that and should return to it as often as possible. That’s my hope.

Sarah, The Bakers Daughter is my all time favorite book! I read it when we were living in Germany, but we had also lived in El Paso for 20ish years. It made me fall in love with everything you had written. I have probably told hundreds of people about that book at this point. I mean.. what’s not to love? So happy you’re back in Germany.. PLEASE get inspired to write another, ok?? xo

Danke for the walk down my own memory lane w/ your remembrances. I love living in Germany for ten years. And Garmish was always a wonderful place to visit.

The Partnachklamm.

Doc B grew up going to the Partnachklamm, but this was my first time.

What started as a sunny hike led to a massive glacial stream that’s been carving the mountain for centuries. Have you heard of an energy vortex? The Partnachklamm has to be one. Mind, body, spirit invigorating.

Truthfully, I started sorta cranky. “Is this another uphill hike?? My IT band hurts already.” I came out utterly electrified— and soaked! Baptized by the ancient waters, one could argue, and not a twinge in my body. There’s something to be said for that.

Many thanks to the staff at these and other park and trail systems. They are the knights of our natural resources.🏔️❤️

Neuschwanstein Castle.

The last time I walked inside, I was five years old. It surpassed all my Sleeping Beauty/Cinderella dreams and fueled my belief in fairy tales. Almost 40 years later, it still does.

Take the inside tour. King Ludwig gives all the hopeless romantic vibes. Stand at the top of the castle and look out in awe. Walk to the bridge over the gorge for the postcard view. Take the foothill up/down through the lush forest. Shop the village below where the horse-drawn carriages run. Get ice cream. It’s as magical as real life gets. 🏰💖
